In the West, the origins of education were greatly influenced by religious organizations: the priests recognized the importance of education and established the school system. In Europe, many of the original universities have a Catholic background. After the Scottish religious reform, a new national Scottish church was established.

Chinese education began in Chinese classical works, not religious organizations.
